CAŅON LODGE & GONDWANA PARK
|
Gondwana Park
is a private nature park which borders the eastern side of Namibias Fish
River Canyon. This 53 000ha (530kmē) private park was born from the philosophy
"
Give back to nature what belongs to nature
"
, a philosophy that its four directors strive to maintain through all the
activities taking place in the park.
The land is slowly recovering from many years of misuse as sheep farming land. Game is being reintroduced to the area and are able to move around unhindered since all farm fences are being removed. The words of Kuki Gallman have made a great impact on the four directors ... "Landowners?" I spoke from my heart. So often I had thought about that very point. "I do not feel like a landowner. I cannot believe that we really own the land. It was there before us, and it will be there after we pass. I believe we can only take care of it, as well as possible, as trustees for our lifetime. It is for me a great provide to be responsible for a chunk of Africa."
Kuki Gallman
These are the words that drive them to restore the land, to the best of their ability, to its former glory. A truly Namibian effort, heart and soul, the park provides employment to approximately 30 Namibians. Constant expansion and improvement of services will, in time, increase this figure. Your hosts, the staff of the Gondwana Caņon Park, eagerly await the opportunity to share with you their knowledge about this unique landscape, tucked into the furthest corner of southern Namibia. |
The harsh rocky desert region at the southern tip of Namibia has made many a traveller think that God has forgotten this land. Not so, just 20 kilometres from the main viewpoint of the Fish River Canyon, leading off the dusty D324, youll find the Caņon Lodge, an oasis seemingly in the middle of nowhere.
The Caņon Lodge is one of two existing accommodation centres in the expanse of the 530 kmē Gondwana Caņon Park.
Tall weather-beaten granite boulders mark the location of the lodge and forms an integral part of the overall design. The 20 thatch stone bungalows are dotted among the kopies and are beautifully designed, with the walls shaped around the hills so that boulders protrude into your room, cool to the touch and smoothly rounded by an eternity of erosion.
| An old farmhouse dating back to 1910 has been renovated to serve as the lodge restaurant. Much has been done to retain the feel of an old farmhouse kitchen and the success is evident in the warmth that seems to linger amongst guests who enjoy our hospitality. Farming implements dating back from the previous century decorate the restaurant and, combined with the lively chatter of guests and staff, gives you that authentic "farmhouse feeling". |

The Caņon Lodge Restaurant boasts an unequalled view of the canyon landscape and, needless to say, makes a meal at the restaurant an opportunity not to be missed. Not many guests are familiar with the occasional blistering heat waves that befall our southern region. The swimming pool, itself an architectural feat, is therefore a definite highlight our facilities. |
