NAMIBNET is offering dial-up connectivity via modem at speeds up to 54kb/s on our standard dial-up lines or 64kb/s dial-up via the Telecom ISDN network. We also offer permanent connections to the Internet either via analogue (33.6kb/s or digital (64kb/s) leased lines.
We also have a department which offers Web Authoring and Design for companies all over the world.
Internet Access
We differenciate between Full Access and E-Mail Only accounts. Full Internet Access means that you are not restricted in any way. All Internet Services are made available.
For example:
- World-Wide-Web (WWW) Services - Browse the world-wide-web of servers to search for information, do research or for entertainment.
- E-mail Services - send and receive electronic mail and documents
- FTP Services to transfer programs over the internet
- IRC Chat Services to get into contact with people around the world
- Telnet access which can be used for example to access Compuserve
- News Services where you will find different interest groups which allow you to read and post information. Participate in discussion groups and keep up to date with the happenings around the world by reading the Reuters News groups.
Advantage/Disadvantage compared to other options:
The advantages of connecting via dial-up modem are
- Flexibility
- You can use the same modem to send and receive faxes provided you have the correct software installed
- Connect to Beltel to retrieve your banking details.
- Low cost
- from N$69.00 per month or N$795.00 per year
- Plus Telecom charges (Normally local charges apply if you're in the same town as your ISP)
- Easy Installation
- We also offer to install the software on your computer at our premises for free, if you prefer on-site installation, we can send one of our technicians around for N$285.00 .
The disadvantages compared to a permanent connection are
- You are not permanently connected and you have to dial-up each time you want to use the Internet.
- Only one person at any one time can make use of the Internet
- Modem dial-up is slower compared to ISDN dial-up or 64kb permanent connections
Who should use it?
Modem dial-up is sufficient for private use or small companies which only use the Internet for specific tasks such as email or surfing the net (one person at a time). If more intensive work on the internet is to be done a permanent connection would be advised.
Requirements:
- GUI Interface (Windows based platform) such as
- Windows 3.1/3.11
- Windows 95/98/98SE NT 2000 or XP
- OS/2
- Apple Macintosh
- 9600 or higher speed modem (56KB/s recommended)
- 20 MB of hard disk space
- Basic knowledge on how to operate a computer
- For high-speed connections (anything better than 14.4kb) a 16550 buffered UART chip is required for optimal performance.
- A telephone line
Recommendations:
Your modem telephone line should preferably be a direct line and not be going through a switchboard or PABX system, if a new line is going to be installed for the modem it would be ideal to ensure it is a electronic exchange line and does not have a 1+1 system fitted.
